Cyprian Kamil Norwid - (1821-1883)

Norwid, Polish poet of the Romantic period, lived most of his life in emigration and was often socially isolated. His work was not very appreciated during his lifetime and almost forgotten but found its revival in the first half of 20th century.

A fragment of the poem, blandly titled "W pamiętniku", is featured in Andrzej Wajda's film "Ashes and Diamonds" (1958), based on a novel by Jerzy Andrzejewski. The film and novel itself question the purpose of struggle against Communism imposed on Poland in the aftermath of WWII.

W pamiętniku

Original

Nietylko, pierw się najadłszy mandragor,
Błądziły w limbach szalone kobiety,
Nietylko Dante i trzeźwy Pythagor,
Byłem i ja tam... pamiętam, niestety!

Że byłem, tomów dwunastu na dowód
Pisać... sił nie mam, bo myśl mię udławia.
Jestem zmęczony! Wolę jechać «do wód» —
Nie na wyjezdnem się o piekle mawia!

Wolę gdzieś jechać, w pilnym interesie,
Patrząc przed siebie z obłędu wyrazem,
Wieki potrącać, jako grzyby w lesie,
Ludzi, epoki, mieszać wszystko razem —

Być tam i owdzie, wonczas, dziś i potem,
Jako się wyżej albo niżej rzekło,
A nie równiejszym wracać kołowrotem,
A nie odpomnić, że zwiedziłem piekło!...

Lecz pytasz: «Owdzie, co tak wielce trudzi,
I które z bliskich spotkałem postaci?»
Tam braci niema, ni bliźnich, ni ludzi,
Tam tylko studja nad sercami braci!

Tam uczuć niema, tylko ich sprężyny,
Zdające z siebie wzajemny rachunek,
Do nieużytej podobne machiny,
Puszczonej w obieg przez pęd lub trafunek.

Tam celów niema, lecz same rutyny
Pozardzewiałe — i niema tam wieków,
Dni, nocy, epok — tam tylko godziny
Biją, jak tępych utwierdzanie ćwieków.

Nieokreślone pierwej cyfrą stałą,
Lecz fatalności pchnięte raz ostrogą.
Nie znaczą wcale, co, kiedy się działo —
W godzinę wybić liczby jej nie mogą!

Rzekłbyś, w tytańskim z wiecznością zapasie,
Mniejsza czy biją minuty czy lata.
Iż każda wątpi o sobie i czasie,
Każda dogania się, lecz nie ulata...

Jakby wcielonej ciągle puls ironji
Słysząc, wiesz naprzód i wiesz ostatecznie,
Że z godzin żadna siebie nie dogoni,
Że nie wydzwoni siebie,dzwoniąc wiecznie.

A ten systemat sprężyn bez ich celu,
Jakby tragedja bez słów i aktorów,
Jak wielu nudów i rozpaczy wielu
Muzyka, gwałtem szukająca chórów

Raz wraz porywa spazmem za wnętrzności,
Jak niezwykłego do morza człowieka;
Tylko nie spazmem nudy, lecz wściekłości,
Który, sam nie wiesz, skąd i poco wścieka.

Wtedy to próba jest, wtedy jest waga,
Ile nad sobą wziąłeś panowania;
Wartość się twoja ci odsłania naga —
I oto widzisz, ktoś ty, bez pytania.

Wokoło lecą szmaty zapalone;

Jestem zmęczony... wolę jechać «do wód»,

Krajów i wieków, gdzie przestrzeń granicą,
Granica czasem... i gdzie, z nad kulbaki
Patrząc, firmament cały... okolicą!

Ashes and Diamonds

Not only maenads, eaters of mandragor,
Roamed raving in the old growth.
Not only Dante, and sober Pythagor,
I went there too - that trip lays heavy toll!

To prove it? I will not write books twelve,
A mere thought is stifling and makes me tired,
I'd rather be off to vacation shores
On departure - no talk about Hell, please be quiet.

I'd rather even go off on urgent business,
Looking crazy absorbed by its mundane matter,
And bump into people as if they were rubbish,
Into centuries, epochs, styles, - silly worldly chatter.

To be there and here, that time, today and later,
Referencing items evenly, whatever their spell,
Rather than returning on the wheel of time
Rather than marking off that I have toured Hell!

But your question: "There, what's so damn tiring? -
And whom have I seen from our celebrity charts?"
There, oh dears, are no human brothers, or peers,
There are only studies of our human hearts!

There are no feelings, but only structures
of power relating blindly their accounts,
Like a useless, pointless machinery,
Thrust into motion by impulse or by chance.

And there is no purpose, but only routines,
Rusty and tough, - and there are no epochs
Nor days, nights, or weeks - solely hours
Beat like blunt spikes stiffly driven in.

Since undetermined by a clear set constant
But spurred on once by a fatal blow
Hours do not mean what happened and whence
Hours cannot ring in their own numbered flow.

This is with Eternity a Titanic struggle.
It seems - no matter whether years or minutes
Beat - yet each doubts itself and doubts Father Time,
Each chases itself down - and in flight fails!

It's the Irony incarnate! Pulsing, incessant
Reminder that you know without error
That no hour will ever chase itself down
Never ring itself out - ringing forever!

And the power spring system, with no purpose
Given, as if a tragic play with no roles,
Actors or lines, or from a great boredom and despair
Born music - fervently seeking singing chorus.

It revolts your guts in a spasm - regularly,
As it is with one on the first marine voyage,
But this is not nausea - but furious rage
Which, you know not, why and wherefore enrages!

Then it is time of trial and of measure
How much? you have taken of self mastery...
Your value stands quite naked and revealed
And then you see - who you are - without inquiry.

And how much you've been named this or that in Time -
Or perhaps been known through your forbears' name
You see - and how much? you've taken on yourself
From custom? style? tone? - or mimicry?

Split off of you, burning like a torch,
Smoldering rags are flying away
And you don't know if you're becoming free
Or whatever's yours is being destroyed!

Will remain only ashes, storm and chaos,
To be swept straight into the abyss,
Or will remain there a shining diamond,
The light of the dawn of everlasting triumph?

But to talk about it and talk proof
That I was there? The thought makes me tired.
I'd rather be off to vacation shores
On departure - no talk about Hell, please be quiet.

I'd rather mount a horse with that surly guy,
Who likes only to be among those of his own,
Knows no history, no architecture, he's mum,
Mum like a statue - a monumental show!

I'd rather take off on double-ended roads
Of lands and centuries - where Space is the limit
What is Limit? It is Time... and where the starry sky
Is a traveller's home - there is peace in it.
